20–21 Ağustos 1968 gecesi Varşova Paktı kuvvetleri Çekoslovakya'ya girdi ve Prag Baharı sona erdi. Dört hafta önce Ulusal Güvenlik Danışmanı Başkan'a Sovyetlerin askerî olarak hareket etmeyeceğini söylüyordu; işgal akşamı Dışişleri Bakanı "Bu beni şaşırttı" dedi. Üç ay sonra CIA'in kendi otopsi raporu, istihbarat topluluğunun hiçbir aşamada işgali "olmamasından daha olası" görmediğini kaydetti.
